My name is Kaari Strack, and I am the new Junior Rails Developer in the Civo team. I graduated from Makers Academy in April 2018, so I'm fresh-out-of-the-box when it comes to industry experience and veteran medals - but don't let that put you off! I don't!

I joined the team just over a month ago now, and the learning curve has been fierce, un-relenting, and dangerously awesome.

Since arriving at Civo, I've discovered the following:

  • There's so much more to Rails than meets the eye
  • SQL and HTML are fussy about almost everything ever
  • rake db:rollback is my new, merciful God
  • You can never have enough migrations
  • And finally, bootstrap checkboxes will one day be the end of me

So, yeah. It has been GLORIOUS! I now have enough notes to repaper my living room, and would absolutely do that if it wasn't just plain weird. It's official - I LOVE MY JOB!

My first project is an internal one that has many finicky, fiddly little things to keep me occupied/reaching for the nearest coffee. It's the largest codebase that I have worked on to date, and I am thoroughly enjoying getting stuck in!

It's very rewarding to see something tangible come from my ceaseless typing, something that can be used by others in a professional setting! I'm very excited to see how far it goes! There have been many "wall-meet-face" times, sure, but it's all part of the journey - and one I am looking forward to pursuing.

Soon I'll be getting my teeth in to the codebase, adding new features here! Can't wait to interact with our rapidly growing community of developers as I do.

In addition to the endless code level-ups and skill-boosts, I am very fortunate to be working in a team that takes the "ail" out of Rails on a daily basis. Together we have engaged in lunchtime PUBG squad runs, outings to the Cinema, team lunches, and a two-day stream of our own Virtual RailsConf 2018 over pizza and witty banter!

I think they're all excellent specimens of human(ish), and I sincerely hope they feel the same about me - I guess I will find out after I post this! Gulp.
