LESSO is a UK education technology company building the trusted AI platform for schools. Founded in 2025, LESSO's platform is built around an AI co-teacher model that connects lesson planning, resource creation, communication, assessment, and wider school workflows in one governed environment. This helps move teachers away from repeatedly creating work from scratch, towards reviewing, adapting, and approving work that has already been prepared for them. At the school leadership level, LESSO gives organizations visibility over how AI is being used across the institution, all in one place. The company was founded by Luke Jimenez, who spent years watching his wife, a classroom teacher, bring planning, preparation, and administration home with her. What began as a personal effort to reduce that workload quickly revealed a bigger problem: fragmentation. Teachers were being handed more disconnected tools rather than an environment capable of coordinating the work around them. LESSO is now launching its Foundation Cohort with UK schools, generating real-world evidence around teacher workload reduction, adoption, output quality, and governed AI use. Its longer-term ambition extends well beyond the application layer: a genuinely sovereign education AI stack for the UK, spanning the application platform, education-specific AI models, and eventually more of the underlying compute.

What was the problem?

Building AI infrastructure for schools is not the same as building for most industries. The sensitivity of the data increases as the product matures, the governance expectations are higher, and the institutions involved have very little tolerance for infrastructure decisions that weren't thought through from the start.

Before selecting Civo, LESSO had several interconnected challenges to resolve:

  • A large proportion of modern AI products depend on infrastructure and model providers headquartered outside the UK. This is becoming an increasingly important question for a platform built to handle sensitive school data, including, eventually, pupil information.
  • LESSO is designed around connected AI workflows rather than individual prompts, requiring an infrastructure platform that can support multiple application services, background workloads, and AI orchestration, with the ability to scale individual components independently.
  • As an early-stage company with a small team, LESSO needed production-grade Kubernetes without the complexity or internal overhead associated with a large cloud operation.
  • The infrastructure decision needed to hold up not just for the first product release, but several stages further into LESSO's roadmap. This meant selecting education-specific AI models and, eventually, a sovereign education AI stack.

These weren't problems that could be solved by picking any available cloud provider. They required a deliberate architectural and strategic choice, made at the very beginning, not retrofitted later.

UK infrastructure and greater sovereignty from day one

LESSO needed its core production environment to be based in the UK, reducing unnecessary reliance on global hyperscalers. For LESSO, sovereignty is broader than where a database is stored. It encompasses infrastructure, legal jurisdiction, supplier dependency, and ultimately the models being used. That consideration becomes increasingly important as LESSO moves deeper into real school workflows and sensitive institutional data.

A Kubernetes-native platform that could scale with the product

LESSO is built as a multi-service AI platform, making Kubernetes an architectural requirement rather than an optional feature. The infrastructure needed to support containerised services, independent workload scaling, fast recovery, and the ability to add new AI services without redesigning the underlying architecture each time the product evolved.

An infrastructure partner aligned with the long-term AI roadmap

LESSO was deliberately looking beyond the requirements of its first product release. The long-term roadmap moves from the application layer into education-specific AI models and, eventually, greater control over the underlying compute. That platform-to-model-to-compute progression required an infrastructure partner whose direction in sovereign cloud, AI infrastructure, GPU capability, and edge computing could support that journey as LESSO grows.

UK sovereign cloud

Built for organizations that can't afford to compromise on where their data lives

Civo's UK region delivers production-grade Kubernetes infrastructure with full data residency in the UK, designed for organizations where data location, legal jurisdiction, and supplier independence are strategic requirements, not afterthoughts.

How did Civo help?

Civo gave LESSO a production-grade Kubernetes environment in the UK that aligned with both its immediate technical requirements and the company's longer-term direction, from day one, rather than as a migration further down the road.

UK infrastructure and sovereignty built in from the start

Civo's UK region gave LESSO an infrastructure foundation that fits directly with its approach to sovereignty. Rather than treating data location and jurisdiction as a later compliance exercise, LESSO was able to build on UK infrastructure from the outset, with the control, predictability, and supplier independence that schools will increasingly require as the platform handles more sensitive organizational and pupil data.

Kubernetes that scales with the product architecture

Civo's Kubernetes platform gave LESSO the ability to run its production environment as a containerized, multi-service platform. This allows for independent workload scaling, reliable orchestration across application services and AI-driven workflows, and the architectural flexibility to add new capabilities without rebuilding the underlying infrastructure. LESSO's production environment is live on Civo, not a prototype.

Scaling Icon

Production-grade infrastructure that one person could deploy and operate

One of the more striking aspects of LESSO's story is that Luke deployed the entire production platform himself, with no formal background in software engineering, DevOps, or cloud architecture. Civo gave him an environment where he could learn, deploy, troubleshoot, and progressively harden a real production platform without needing a large internal infrastructure team around him. That accessibility didn't come at the expense of capability.

A partner for the long-term roadmap, not just today's infrastructure

LESSO's ambition goes well beyond the current application layer. Civo's direction across sovereign cloud, AI compute, GPU infrastructure, and edge computing means the relationship has the potential to grow alongside LESSO's platform. Thus, supporting the move towards education-specific AI models and, eventually, a more complete sovereign education AI stack, rather than simply hosting the first version of the product.

The relationship between LESSO and Civo has been shaped as much by people as by platform. Luke specifically highlights the team as being consistently accessible, genuinely interested in what LESSO is building, and willing to engage with where the company is heading, not just what it needs today. This connection mattered particularly because of Luke's own journey.

Luke Jimenez, Founder & CEO, LESSO, commented on the importance of this by saying:

"We do not want LESSO's infrastructure provider to simply sell us compute. We want to work with people who understand why we are building a sovereign education AI stack and who are ambitious about the same direction. The wider Civo team has made that experience feel collaborative rather than transactional."

Building and deploying a production platform from a non-technical background, using AI coding agents to fill the knowledge gaps, is not a conventional path. Having an infrastructure team willing to engage with that journey collaboratively rather than transactionally made a material difference to LESSO's ability to move quickly and build with confidence.

Luke Jimenez spoke more on this by saying, "Kubernetes has a reputation for complexity, but Civo gave me an environment where I could learn, deploy, troubleshoot, and progressively harden a real production platform without needing a large infrastructure team around me."

The near-term focus is LESSO's Foundation Cohort: real-world deployments with UK schools, generating evidence around teacher workload reduction, adoption, output quality, and governed AI use, all running on Civo infrastructure. Beyond that, the roadmap moves progressively deeper into the AI stack… Education-specific models designed around UK education use cases, GPU-based workloads, multi-agent orchestration, and eventually a sovereign education AI stack that gives schools genuine end-to-end control.

“What makes Civo particularly interesting to us is that they are useful for where we are today, but their direction also aligns with where we want to be several years from now. That combination of accessible technology, strong people, and shared ambition is why I would recommend them.”
