What is The Spark? Why Civo is building Britain's sovereign AI infrastructure

Every age has had its spark, the moment an idea stops being an idea and becomes something a whole country can build on. Steam, electricity and the web all began with people who could see what was possible, but each one only changed the world once someone built the infrastructure to make it real.
Britain has never been short of those people. Our universities produce world-leading AI research, our engineers are among the best anywhere, and our founders build companies the rest of the world wants to buy.
What we have not had is the infrastructure to match them. Most of the compute that British AI runs on today is owned, operated, and governed somewhere else, which means we have the talent but have spent years renting the foundations.

Why we are doing this
Most infrastructure companies start with what they sell. Racks, regions, instance types, price per hour. We are starting with why, because the why is the part nobody else in this market can copy.
The demand is already there. In our Digital Sovereignty Revolution 2026 research, 66% of UK IT leaders said they would consider switching providers to regain control. Only 15% have actually moved.
That gap is not a lack of will. It is a lack of somewhere credible to go. World-leading talent needs world-leading infrastructure, and you cannot switch to something that has not been built.

Two and a half minutes on why Britain's talent deserves infrastructure to match. Then take apart an NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 rack in 3D.

Policy will not close that gap on its own. Strategies and roundtables do not run workloads. Compute, cooling and density have to exist physically, in this country, close to the people using them.
So we are building them.
On 22 September we unveiled the first of 40 UK edge data centres, in Hertfordshire. It opens at eight megawatts and rises to 38 megawatts on the same plot. Five further sites totalling 150 megawatts are already secured, across Lancashire, Greater Manchester, London and Oxfordshire. The full network adds up to a combined gigawatt of capacity, rolled out over the next three years.
Every one of those sites is built for direct-to-chip liquid cooling, because the hardware that matters next cannot be cooled any other way. And every one is designed around NVIDIA Vera Rubin, which we will be among the first in the UK to offer. We are taking orders now, alongside capacity on B300, B200, H200 and H100 today.
All of it runs on our own open, interoperable stack. Kubernetes, compute and inference, under British control from the silicon up.
That is the difference between a sovereign AI cloud and a sovereign AI press release. One of them you can actually deploy on.
What happens next is up to you
A spark on its own does not do much. It needs something to catch.
That is the part we cannot do alone. The researchers waiting months for compute time. The enterprises putting agents into production. The smaller companies priced out of building at this scale. The public bodies who need to know exactly whose law their data sits under.
The infrastructure is being built. Now it needs the ideas that will run on it.
